I believe people who work hard and play by the rules should be able to support their family. Yet thousands of Washington families are working hard and still living in poverty. Now we have an opportunity to support Washington’s working families by increasing the state minimum wage to $12 per hour and supporting paid sick leave.

I urge you to support sick leave to protect customers from getting sick and ensure workers don’t have to choose between their health and paying their bills. I also urge you to raise the minimum wage to $12 across the state. More than half a million workers – many of them working moms – would benefit from this increase.

Raising the minimum wage will also help many local companies. Most small businesses depend on consumers to buy their products and services. As a result, these businesses will actually benefit from a higher minimum wage because consumers will have more money to spend in their communities.

Together, these two reforms would be a big step toward addressing inequality and providing greater economic security to hard-working Washingtonians.
