Tell Your Senator Not to Water Down the Equal Pay Bill

Dear Senator, I am thankful for the Washington State Legislature's consideration for gender pay equity legislation this year. As the last few months of public dialogue about women’s experiences has repeatedly, and often painfully, highlighted, it is past time to address barriers that women face every day in the workplace. I know that you agree. That is why as your constituent, I urge you to pass Equal Pay legislation while preserving the right of local elected leaders to protect our daughters and granddaughters from discrimination in the future. SB 5140 and HB 1506 are long overdue updates to Washington’s 75-year-old Equal Pay law. They will protect workers from pay secrecy policies, will require employers to have bona fide reasons for differences in pay and will give workers effective recourse when job disparities are not based on bona fide factors. I am deeply concerned to hear that lobbyists are advocating that these important solutions should come at the cost of preempting any future action by local communities to help further close the wage gap. Although these bills are important steps forward, they alone will not eliminate the gender pay and career opportunity gaps. It is important to strengthen protections against discrimination for working women today without sacrificing future generations. Preempting local governments' future actions on pay parity effectively denies women and other marginalized communities the right to fight for their own worth in their own democracy. Our communities and economy will be stronger when women receive the pay and job opportunities they deserve. Thank you.
