Over the past five years, Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) has provided a short-term solution to problems faced by undocumented people, who came to the United States as youth, by providing relief from deportation, accessible pathways to careers, and additional stability for our communities to thrive. The Trump administration’s decision to cancel DACA is not only immoral and cruel, but it also will hurt our economy.

Since 2012, 886,814 undocumented people have paid over $400 million on DACA fees. With these work permits, DACA recipients have entered our workforce, and ending it will be massively disruptive not only to their lives but also to their employers, their coworkers, and their employees. Washington State’s economy alone will lose $1 million of its gross domestic product (GDP) per year with DACA’s termination.

U.S. Senators Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) and Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) introduced the bipartisan DREAM Act that provides a path to citizenship for the nearly 1.8 million young immigrants who have grown up in the United States. I urge you to join your colleagues in supporting the DREAM Act!
