Seattle City Council: Support A $15 Minimum Wage!

The Seattle City Council's committee on the minimum wage is poised to vote this Thursday on the $15 per hour proposal. Yet the outcome is still in doubt. With less than 24 hours to go, greedy corporations are lobbying hard to open special loopholes and delay the Mayor's $15 minimum wage plan.

The entire nation is watching what we do here in Seattle. If we succeed, we'll make history and help build momentum for raising the minimum wage across the country.

Thursday is the day. Tell the Seattle City Council to raise the minimum wage to $15 per hour and reject efforts to delay or weaken Mayor Murray's proposal!

I urge you to vote now to approve the Mayor's $15 minimum wage proposal without delay or weakening loopholes.
 
I am a Seattle resident and I support the $15 minimum wage proposal agreed upon by the diverse Income Inequality Advisory Committee and proposed by Mayor Murray.

This proposal will ensure that every worker in Seattle receives at least a $15 minimum wage in just a few years, while providing smaller businesses a phase-in period to allow them to prepare for this change. 
 
The Mayor’s proposal will put $3 billion more into low wage consumers’ wallets, giving a much needed boost to our small businesses and communities.
 
I urge you to:
 
1. Close loopholes like the "training wage."  Sub-minimum wages will only encourage some employers to substitute young workers for existing employees, or to take advantage of vulnerable persons with disabilities.  The training wage only institutionalizes discrimination. 
 
2. Clarify strong enforcement. The City should have enforcement authority including active investigations of violations, and not just sending responses to worker complaints.
