As your constituent, I urge you to support a strong Pregnant Workers Fairness Act (ESSB 6149). One of every 10 babies born in Washington now are low birth weight or premature. A strong Pregnant Workers Fairness Act will help more babies arrive healthy and thriving -- but not if it excludes large numbers of working women and restricts the kinds of accommodations covered. The majority of women will be pregnant and working at some point in their lives. Ensuring that each woman, regardless of who she works for, her health condition, or her income, has access to reasonable accommodations will support her ability to continue earning a paycheck when her growing family most needs the income. Opponents of this legislation want to restrict employers' and employees' choices about which kinds of accommodations will be covered, and exclude non-profit organizations (like many hospitals) where many women are employed. That's just not sensible. No one should have to choose between a healthy pregnancy and a paycheck, but without strong protections in place, this is a choice many Washington women are forced to make. Please support a strong Pregnant Workers Fairness Act (ESSB 6149) that does not leave many women unprotected -- it's good for women, good for babies, and good for Washington State!
